Before You Get Started...
Getting Started
1. Dry-fit your rear bumper overlays by following the instructions below without removing the backing to the 3M double-sided tape. Ensure the part is centered and make note of its positioning for reference later. This will give you the opportunity to practice the installation without permanently installing the overlay on the truck.
2. Detach the lower clips from the rear bumpers.
3.) Ensure the bumper is clean and free of debris. Use Isopropyl rubbing alcohol to free the bumper surface of any chemicals or soap residue that may limit the effectiveness of the 3M tape.
4.) Apply the adhesion promoter to the areas of the tailgate where the 3M tape will be touching down. (Read the instructions on the adhesion promoter tube to learn how to begin the flow of adhesion promoter.)
4.) Apply the adhesion promoter to the areas of the tailgate where the 3M tape will be touching down. (Read the instructions on the adhesion promoter tube to learn how to begin the flow of adhesion promoter.)
5.) Take your blackout tape and run it along the inner perimeter of your passenger and drivers side bumper. This will ensure that the OEM bumper will not show when the bumper overlays are fully installed.
6.) Before it is time to install the overlay, we must remove the red backing tape completely from either the passenger or drivers' side BumperShellz (it does not matter which side you start with).
7.) Wrap the front side cover around to the corner of the bumper. *If you have them, be sure that the overlay sensor hole cutouts align with your truck sensors before applying pressure. Be careful not to let the tape touch down until the overlay is centered, and you are happy with its position. Once you double-check this, apply firm pressure to the part as you move along. Be sure to apply direct pressure around the senor hole as well. (note: ensure that the wire from the light is accessible for later installation)
8.) Once one side is installed, repeat steps 6-7 on the other overlay.
Lighting Installation
Below are optional instructions for
9.) Safety Check
9.a. Make sure the truck is turned off and the key is removed.
9.b. Set the parking brake.
9.c. If you’re working outdoors, ensure you have enough lighting and space to move around the tailgate area safely.

10.) Remove the Rear Taillight Assembly
10.a. Open the tailgate. 10.b. Locate the two 10 mm bolts or Phillips screws along the inside edge of the bed, facing the taillight. 10.c. Remove those two bolts/screws. 10.d. Gently pull the taillight housing straight out to the side. It’s held by two alignment clips that pop straight out. ⚠️ Tip: Use steady pressure — don’t twist or pry from the side, or the clips could break. 10.e. Unplug the main taillight wiring connector from the truck body by pressing the release tab and pulling gently. |
11.) Identify the Reverse Light Wire
On the 2024 Tacoma, the reverse light wire is typically found in the taillight harness:
Color: Typically, green wire (verify with test light or multimeter before tapping)*
Function: Provides 12 V power only when the truck is in reverse
To confirm:
11.a. Turn the ignition to “ON” (without starting).
11.b. Put the truck in reverse (with someone pressing the brake).
11.c. Use a test light or multimeter to find the wire that becomes powered only in reverse.
11.d. Mark that wire — this is where your rock light power will connect.

12.) Cut back the protective sleeve about 2 inches to give yourself room to splice in the new wires.
13.) Connect the Rock Light Power Wire
13.a. Choose a clean section of the reverse light power wire (typically Green wire).
13.b. Snap a red SolderStick T-Tap connector over that wire:
13.c. Crimp a male quick-spade terminal onto the positive (red) wire from your rock lights.
13.d. Plug the male spade terminal into the T-Tap connector.

14.) Connect ground wire
14.a. Choose a clean section of the reverse light power wire (Black/White).

15.) Test the wiring
15.a. Turn the ignition to “ON.”
15.b. Put the truck in reverse (with the parking brake on).
15.c. Verify the rock lights illuminate at the same time as your reverse lights.
15.d. If they don’t turn on:
15.a. Turn the ignition to “ON.”
15.b. Put the truck in reverse (with the parking brake on).
15.c. Verify the rock lights illuminate at the same time as your reverse lights.
15.d. If they don’t turn on:
- Double-check your T-Tap connection is fully closed and seated.
- Confirm your ground is secure.
- Recheck the wire color and polarity.
16.) Reinstall Taillight
16.a. Plug the taillight wiring harness back in. (Secure any loose wires from the rock light with zip ties)
16.b. Align the taillight’s clips with the body holes and push straight in until it clicks into place.
16.c. Reinstall the two bolts/screws you removed earlier.
16.d. Close the tailgate and confirm everything fits flush.

The Finale
17.) Put firm pressure on the taped areas of the BumperShellz, and remove any protective film.
18.) Re-install the lower clips of your rear bumpers that you detached in Step 2.
19.) Wait 48 hours before taking your vehicle through automated car washes or driving on the highway. Reapply pressure to all taped areas 24 hours after the initial installation.
Care for your BumperShellz™
Most BumperShellz colors will function much like paint. They can be buffed, polished, taken through automated car washes, and whatever else you would normally do. Some ABS colors can be sanded down and re-painted if ever you decide you want to change colors.
