Installation Video Demonstration (with transcript)
Hey, everyone, I’m Grant Evans from ecological. Today we’re going to be showing how to install the front and rear BumperShellz on a 2007-2013 Silverado 1500.
With BumperShellz you can cover up your chrome or any rust or small dents you have on your bumper.
There isn’t any need to have a body shop help you out with these.
The set we are going to install today for both the front and the rear set will takebyou under 40 minutes start to finish.
If you haven’t ordered your BumperShellz yet, here's a reminder that we are incorporating
a few new options.
For this model, if you have the air intake, we are also now offering stainless steel grill inserts.
So keep an eye out for that. And we have also added a new finish option. You guys have been asking for this for a long time.
The new option is called ArmorShellz. It is essentially our regular BumperShellz that we spray with a polyurea bed-liner material. So it's like bed-lining your bumper without the mess and without destroying your bumper. So if you haven’t yet, go to ecoological.com and place your order.
For now, let's get started with the install.
01:05
If you have this year of truck, then chances are that you are dealing with, or will have
01:09
to deal with rust or dents on the front bumper.
01:12
This bumper, in particular, tends to attract a lot of rocks and debris, and the rear has
01:16
a similar issue with rocks from the rear wheels chipping away at the chrome underneath, and
01:21
dents are a pretty common issue with the thin steel.
01:25
This video will give you a step-by-step tutorial for installing BumperShellz, and get your
01:30
truck looking new again without having to replace your entire bumper by using an option
01:34
that is quicker, more durable, and in most cases, cheaper than paint or vinyl.
01:39
First, you need to clean your bumper thoroughly.
01:42
BumperShellz attach using the highest quality 3M tape.
01:46
This auto-grade tape is extremely strong, but can only work if it has a clean surface
01:51
to bond to.
01:52
You can start off cleaning with soap and water, but ensure all that soap is rinsed off the bumper
01:57
so it doesn’t leave any residue.
01:59
And then use regular isopropyl alcohol to ensure the best adhesion surface.
02:04
If the ambient temperature is below 68 degrees Fahrenheit during your installation, the 3M
02:09
tape will not adhere correctly.
02:11
That means that if you are installing in the colder months of the year, you are going to
02:14
need to heat the bumper and the 3M tape with a heat gun or hairdryer.
02:19
And just be careful while you are doing this not to warp the BumperShellz or trim on your
02:22
truck.
02:23
After the BumperShellz are Installed, hot or cold weather will not affect the adhesion.
02:28
This is only a factor during the initial installation.
02:31
Before starting the final install, perform a dry-fit.
02:34
Install the BumperShellz without removing the red backing to the 3M tape.
02:38
This is to check the fit and give you an idea of how the BumperShellz will go on before
02:42
it’s permanent.
02:43
Shift it around until there is either none of the original bumper showing or a very minimal
02:48
amount.
02:49
After you’re satisfied, remove the BumperShellz.
02:51
Apply the provided “black out tape” around the outside edges of the center bumper.
02:56
This will ensure that no sliver of chrome is visible around the edges after the final
03:00
install.
03:02
To begin the final install of the front bumper cover, remove all the red backing to the 3M
03:07
adhesive tape.
03:08
After that is done, carefully slide the cover over the bumper, making sure the tape doesn’t
03:12
touch down prematurely.
03:14
Ensure that the cover is pushed flush with the vertical bumper surface and that it has
03:18
slid entirely under the front grille.
03:21
Begin at either side by making sure the edge of the cover is butted up against the side
03:25
of the corner bumper.
03:27
None of the original steel center bumper should be visible at this point.
03:31
You can now start to put a little bit of pressure on the 3M tape only on the vertical bumper
03:35
surface.
03:36
Work your way down to the opposite side of the bumper, ensuring that the cover is tucked
03:40
in above the lower valance.
03:44
After that is done, you can start putting firm pressure on the entire vertical surface of the cover where the 3M tape is contacting the bumper.
After you are completely satisfied with the adhesion on the vertical surface, begin putting pressure on the horizontal surface of the cover just forward of the grille.
This is the last step in the process.
Give it another once over, and then your all finished.
This entire process, start to finish, should have taken you anywhere from 10-20 minutes.
04:11
We’ll have time to step back and admire later.
For now, lets move onto the rear covers.
04:17
The steel on the rear bumper is incredibly thin, so if you do have any dents, you are definitely not alone.
04:22
If the dents are really bad, you might want to consider trying to bang out the dents a little before doing your dry-fit to make sure everything is going to work okay.
The rear install is just slightly more difficult than the installation for the front.
You do have to tuck the cover under the step pad and remove 4 plastic clips.
Two on the outboard edges of the bumper, and two under around where your tow-hitch is.
04:45
When removing them, if any of your clips break, you can typically pick up replacements for cheap at your local auto-parts store.
04:52
After those are removed, you need to begin loosening up the step pad to make room for the BumperShellz installation.
Use your trim tool to pop out the center pad.
As for the top step-pad, pry up the first one or two tabs.
You can go through the process of pulling up all the tabs from underneath the bumper, but that is typically not necessary.
Your dry-fit will let you know if you have loosened up the step pad enough.
To start the dry fit, slip the edge of the BumperShell underneath the center pad, again, with the red backing to the 3M tape still in place.
When you slide it up to the step pad, use your trip tool again to wedge the top flange of the BumperShell underneath the step.
The rest of it should slip on pretty easily after that.
Now is the time to make sure your sensor holes are correctly positioned, and will line up correctly when you do your final install.
Do a last check around the perimeter, and repeat on the opposite side.
When you’re ready, remove the BumperShellz to begin prepping the bumper for the installation.
Clean the bumper thoroughly, and rinse off any soap residue.
Wipe the surface where the tape will be applied with regular isopropyl alcohol or a 3M brand adhesion promoter.
06:03
Finally, remove the backing to the 3M tape, and use the same technique for the install that you practiced with your dry fit.
06:09
Be careful to not let the tape touch down until everything is positioned correctly.
06:21
If you have reverse sensors, make sure that you have centered the hole around the sensor
06:25
before moving on to the corners of the bumper.
06:30
When you are satisfied with the positioning, begin putting good firm pressure on the taped areas of the BumperShellz. Give the step pad and center pad a couple good whacks to re-seat the taps, and re-insert the clips.
Your Trucks Bumper Transformation should now be completely finished.
This should have been a relatively easy installation, but if you do have any issues, please contact
our customer service number and email which are listed in the summary.
We do also recommend that you not take your truck through any car washes for at least
48 hours, also, the day after you install these, go around, and put some more pressure
on the taped areas again just to make sure everything is attached correctly.
We’d love to see before and after pictures of your truck so please send them to us, and
we’ll feature your truck on our social media platforms.
Also, definitely follow us on Instagram and Facebook to keep an eye on the stuff we’re doing.
Thanks for watching!
